After finding the sunshine and a good place to park, we decided to explore the area by bike. Steve planned a route taking us up to look at the viaduct from a good vantage point above Millau, then on to the old village of Peyre.
There is an excellent cycle path by the River Tarn from Millau. We then rode on the D41, a very quiet road passing under the viaduct. This took us to Peyre, classified as one of the ‘most beautiful villages in France’. The 11th century St. Christophe church and stone houses cling onto the cliffside where they have been built into the limestone rock known as ‘tuf’. Like many other villages at this time of year, it’s deserted apart from a few cats lounging in the sunshine and a couple of people strolling through. After an enjoyable day out, we decide to return by the same route and stay another night at the campsite.
